Self-Employed in Michigan? Estimate Your 2027 ACA Subsidy

By Dameicos Dickson, Licensed Insurance Agent ·

If you're self-employed in Michigan, your 2027 ACA subsidy is built on one number: your net income, not what hits your bank account. Get that number right and you could save thousands. Get it wrong, and starting this year you'll pay back every extra dollar at tax time. Here's how to estimate it in four steps, and how to stay on the right side of the subsidy cliff.

Step 1: Start with net profit, not gross sales

HealthCare.gov asks self-employed people for net self-employment income. That's the profit on your Schedule C, after business expenses like mileage, supplies, software, a home office and equipment.

Then it gets a little better. The Marketplace uses your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), which starts from the adjusted gross income on your tax return (HealthCare.gov). For self-employed people, that number is usually lower than profit, because half of your self-employment tax comes off before you get there.

Takeaway: Pull up last year's Schedule C. Your 2027 estimate starts with profit, not sales.

Step 2: Find your spot against the 2027 subsidy cliff

The extra subsidy help from the pandemic years ended after 2025. For 2027 coverage, there's no premium tax credit if your income is above 400% of the federal poverty level (healthinsurance.org). Based on the 2026 poverty guidelines, the cutoff is:

Below the line, you never pay more than a set share of your income for the benchmark Silver plan. For 2027, that share tops out at 10.22% of income (IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26). Go $1 over the line, and you pay full price.

On the low end, a single person earning about $22,000 or less may qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan instead of a Marketplace plan.

Takeaway: If your estimate lands within a few thousand dollars of your cutoff, keep reading. Step 3 is for you.

Step 3: Use legal ways to lower your number

Self-employed people have more control over their income number than almost anyone else. A few common moves:

Simplified example: A Metro Detroit freelance designer, single, expects $70,000 in profit for 2027. After the half-of-self-employment-tax adjustment, her income is roughly $65,000. That's over the $63,840 cliff, so she gets no help. If she picks a Bronze plan and puts $4,500 into an HSA, she lands around $60,500, under the line. Now she pays no more than about $515 a month for the benchmark Silver plan, and she has $4,500 saved for medical bills.

Takeaway: Talk to your tax preparer before you set your 2027 estimate. The right move depends on your whole tax picture.

Step 4: Update your income during the year

This one changed for 2027 coverage, and it matters most for people with up-and-down income. Starting with tax year 2026, the IRS eliminated the repayment caps on extra subsidy. If you earn more than you estimated, you repay all of the extra help when you file your taxes, not just part of it.

The fix is simple: when a big contract lands or business slows down, update your Marketplace application right away. If your income drops, you may qualify for more help mid-year.

Takeaway: Set a reminder to check your year-to-date profit every quarter, the same time you pay estimated taxes.
